Pop-Up Windows and Information Retrieval

Communication affichée; International audience; Paralinguistics organizers such as parenthesis, footnotes, and pop-up fields on screen, should play an important role signalling the writer's “minimization” intention when secondary points are concerned. This experiment investigated the role of pop-up fields compared to brackets in an information retrieval task. The results showed that, in this kind of task, putting secondary pieces of information into pop-up fields significantly speeded the search process compared to a condition in which the same information was displayed in brackets.

Intégrer des informations en escamots dans les textes techniques : quels effets sur les processus cognitifs ?

Though computerized sytems now offer a wide range of options for accessing and displaying text or text-picture information, little is known about their effects on the user's cognitive processes. In this paper, we investigate the effect of a computer-specific display (pop-up window) which consists in displaying some pieces of information in windows that appear only under user's action. Experiments were carried out to compare the pop-up window device with other devices used on paper. The experiments dealt with text only as well as text-picture documents and involved various tasks. Results are discussed from a theoretical and a practical point of view.

We are focusing on text setting devices, especially the parenthesis, the footnotes, the more explicit text type statements (such as «Example : » before a text part) and the pop-up windows. Methods of experimental psychology were used in order to analyse written texts and also to study the influence of para-linguistic organizers on the reading process (memorisation and information retrieval). Elektroniski glabājamo dokumentu skaits katru gadu pieaug, līdz ar to, tas meklēšana un kārtošana var aizņemt laiku, lai atvieglot šo procesu rodas nepieciešamība pēc elektronisko dokumentu organizēšanas izpētēs. Darba mērķis ir noskaidrot, kādi ir cilvēku personiskās elektroniskās informācijas organizēšanas paradumi. Bakalaura darba teorētisko bāzi veido sociāli kognitīvā teorija. Despite an increasing development, the design of computerized documents is still based on intuitive or esthetics concerns, rather than on experimental evidence. However a large body of literature has investigated the effects of various display factors, both on a perceptual and on a cognitive level. We propose here a review of research and its implication on the design of computerized documents.
